Lower Back Pain:
Lower back pain is one of the leading causes of lost time from work. It is also one of the most preventable spinal conditions. Lumbar spine can be damaged by improper bending and lifting. Bending at the waist and lifting heavy objects without bending the knees puts undue stress on the lumbar spinal muscles and can cause intervertebral disc injuries. Repeated bending and lifting and improper positions can cause arthritic changes in the lumbar spine including bone spurs, tearing up muscles and ligaments and cartilage degeneration. MRI findings frequently include dehydration of the intervertebral discs which causes cracks and tears and allows the liquid center of the disc to become displaced and compressed the lumbar nerves. This can cause pain in the lumbar spine and radiating pain and numbness in the legs. Always remember to bend your legs, grasp the object you are lifting, pulling close to your body and keep the spine straight as you lift. This will prevent injury and deterioration of the lumbar spine and prolong the life of the intervertebral discs.
the intervertebral disc is composed of an outer circular layer of of cartilage called the annual is fibrosis. The center of the disc is a thick fluid called the nucleus pulposus. When the outer layer of the disc tears that allows the liquid center within to seep out into the central canal or into the neural foramina where it compresses the sciatic nerve. When the sciatic nerve becomes compressed pain, numbness, tingling and weakness of the musculature is noted in the leg. A bulging disc is a disc that has not completely herniated. Some herniations are so large that surgery is the only answer to relieve the pain. Frequently, however, small herniations and disc bulges can be treated with conservative chiropractic procedures. Examination and x-rays can help to localize level of nerve compression. Oftentimes an MRI is necessary to completely document and evaluate the severity of a sciatic condition. A swollen or inflamed disc can mimic the symptoms of a herniation and can be easily treated with conservative chiropractic care. Multiple occurrences are a good indication that a chiropractic spinal examination is indicated and treatment and proper rehabilitation can prevent a worsening of the condition.

Eating the right foods and reducing your consumption of preprepared food, packaged food and preservatives can help to prolong life and prevent disease. Candies, cakes, cookies, pasta, bleached flour and rice will cause you to gain weight and promote many diseases which are easily avoidable. Smoking and trans fats can clog arteries causing circulatory problems and heart disease. Dietary supplements can help to replace the nutrients not present in today’s standard American diet.
